State railway operator PT Kereta Api’s (PT KA) operation area V of Purwokerto, Central Java alleged that signal error was the cause of the fatal collision between a Mutiara Selatan train and a Kutojaya train at Langen station in Banjar, West Java at 2:24 a.m. on Friday.
“Based on facts we’ve collected from the scene, we suspect that the Mutiara Selatan train driver misread the signal,” said spokesman to the PT KA area V, Surono, as quoted by kompas.com.
Surono said the Mutiara Selatan train driver should have waited for the signal before accelerating his train, as the Kutojaya train was stopping at the line three crossings, waiting for a green light signal.
Aside from alleged human error, Surono also suspected a technical glitch was involved in the crash.
“Those facts are what we found in the field. But we await the final conclusion from the investigation now being carried out by the National Commission for Transportation Safety (KNKT),” Surono said.
He added that PT KA is expected to remove one of the severely damaged Kutojaya train cars and two locomotives from line three by Friday evening.
“Currently, our technical team is also repairing broken lines,” he said.
Three people were killed and dozens were injured on Friday when the Bandung-Surabaya Mutiara Selatan train collided with the Bandung-Kutoarjo Kutojaya Selatan train in Langen, West Java.
